Stand Down is a military term originating from times of war when exhausted combat troops were given the opportunity to return to a place of relative security to rest and recover. Stand Downs today have become common as a means to care for and advocate for homeless veterans. Veterans can also receive referrals to other assistance such as health care, housing solutions, employment, substance use treatment and mental health counseling available from the numerous community partners.

They are collaborative events, coordinated between local VA Medical Centers, other government agencies and community-based homeless service providers that focus on providing and offering services and support each year to our nation’s Heroes regardless of their barriers.

Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller says he is confident businesses in the city will begin reopening sometime in May but is warning that progress will likely occur in fits and starts and may not always track with the rest of the state. While his administration is talking to health officials and business leaders about plans to slowly unfurl the economy from its COVIDrelated shutdown, Keller and city Chief Operating Officer Lawrence Rael are making it clear that normalcy is still a long way off.

Michelle Lujan Grisham said she plans to extend through May Her administration has closed nonessential businesses, severely restricted activity at hotels and limited restaurants to takeout and delivery orders. But even when her administration ultimately loosens or lifts restrictions, Keller said he could make different decisions for Albuquerque, including extending closures if he deems it necessary.

This decision was made primarily out of concern for our community due to the unpredictable nature of the current coronavirus outbreaks. We had hoped to have a specific date at this time, but Expo NM, our home last year and this, is currently blown out with ongoing events and the understandable flurry of changes, requests, etc, related to coronavirus. We expect to have the actual date nailed down in the next week or so and will let you know as soon as we do. Our apologies to our wonderful makers, volunteers, sponsors and vendors, but we do feel we are making the correct decision with respect to the health and comfort of all the wonderful people who participate and visit with us every year.

We are also planning on doing a smaller event with makers, soldering instruction, and other cool activities at Quelab in late July or early August. Albuquerque Mini Maker Faire is organized and produced by the non-profit New Mexico New Makers , which seeks to both stage the event and build community and connections within the maker community of New Mexico. Maker Faire is a gathering of fascinating, curious people who enjoy learning and who love sharing what they can do.
